The Day after Labor Day

Ready for the first day of school.
The day after Labor Day has been the first day of school as long as I can remember. Though some school districts no longer continue this tradition, Alice and Miriam's first day of school was in fact today.

Unlike many middle- and high-school students, they walk to the school, around 20 minutes from home. Soon after they left home this morning, we also left and drove from Fairfax to Ann Arbor.

Labor Day weekend in Fairfax was a lot of fun, ending with a great dinner in the back yard. By great good luck, we had 4 days of very pleasant temperatures, a break from the usual heat, probably thanks to the hurricane that's lingering off the East Coast.

A pot of mussels simmering on the stove.
Patio table ready for dining.
Mussels, wine broth, and crusty bread in a bowl. The next course was salmon, grilled vegetables, and salad.
Salmon and salad that I ate the previous night at Ozzie's restaurant.
I love salmon! Eating it two nights in a row is great as far as I'm concerned.
Actually it's quite lucky that I love salmon -- see this: "USDA Admits Weight Loss Not Possible For People Who Don’t Like Salmon." To quote this important article:
"WASHINGTON—Stating that any attempt to slim down without it would be wholly ineffective, representatives from the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service admitted at a press conference Tuesday that weight loss is just not possible for people who don’t like salmon. 'For anyone looking to get down to a healthy body weight, there is simply no viable option aside from making salmon a major part of your diet, so you’d better enjoy it,' said spokesperson Marcia Donner.... Donner added that dieters who also don’t like almonds should be prepared to gain another 25 pounds."
Full disclosure: I do know that The Onion, source of the article, is a satiric website. I am not one of those confused persons who cites it as fact, though sometimes I wish it would be for real.
